2025 Jewish Short Play Festival Call For Submissions

DEADLINE: Monday, March 24, 2025

After a successful debut, we are proud to share the return of the Jewish Short Play Festival with more laughter, drama, and thought-provoking themes in store! With updated guidelines and additional creative opportunities, we invite you to share with us your brilliant short play. The chosen plays will be performed by San Diego’s leading stage actors on Monday, June 23, 2025.

 

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

PLAY CONTENT RULES: 

    • The play must speak to Jewish identity, heritage, cultural experiences, or values. We also encourage the submission of plays containing Israeli subject matters and/or written by playwrights from Israel 
  • You do not need to be Jewish to submit a play - ALL playwrights are welcome!
  • Submission must be between 5 and 10 minutes in length and must be an original play written by YOU!
  • Plays must have the ability to be performed by 1 to 6 actors. Monologues will be accepted
  • Musical theatre submissions are acceptable but please note that requests for musical accompaniment or arrangements will not be honored. All singing will be acapella
  • Comedy, drama, historical, and political plays are all welcome 

PLAY SUBMISSION RULES:

  • Deadline for submission is Monday, March 24, 2025
  • Plays must be submitted either as a Word document or as a PDF
  • Plays must be written in 12pt font
  • There is no cost to submit. Plays will be submitted via a form available HERE
  • All finalists will be notified by Monday, April 28, 2025

THE PROCESS:

  • All plays submitted will be read blindly by the Straight From The Page committee
  • The top scripts that are chosen will be cast and directed for a staged reading
  • Casting and directing of the top scripts to be done solely by Straight From The Page producer(s) or their designate. Playwrights do not have input in casting or directing decisions
  • Selected plays will be performed on June 23, 2025 at the Lawrence Family JCC, JACOBS FAMILY CAMPUS as a staged reading; immediately following, the winning play will be selected by audience handwritten ballots. Plays will also be judged separately by a panel of industry professionals and a monetary prize will be awarded for the top choices in each category
  • Plays will be performed according to a traditional staged reading format - there will be no set, costumes, or props, and plays will not be memorized
  • The Lawrence Family JCC reserves the right to cancel and/or modify the program at any time
  • Straight From The Page is unable to compensate for any travel and accommodation expenses
